Cactus McCoy 2: The Ruins of Calavera is the second flash game in the Cactus McCoy series and a sequel to the first game, Cactus McCoy and The Curse of Thorns. Like the original game, this game too has 12 levels to complete - which means a total of 60 challenges and 60 treasures - but the number of badges and weapons differ a little. This time there are 75 types of weapons (instead of 60) and 60 badges (instead of 80). The game is released on 6 October 2011 by Flipline Studios, who is also the developer of the first game.

Plot

Following his previous adventure, Cactus McCoy goes on another, leading him to a winged idol. But before he can take it, he is stopped my a mysterious cloaked woman, who sternly requests him to back off. They briefly fight over the idol, but when they lift it off its pedestal, they trigger a booby trap. This startles the woman, which McCoy uses as his chance of escape. As they are running away from a large boulder, near the exit of the cave, McCoy runs across an unstable bridge that collapses. Luckily, before he falls to his death, the woman removes her cloak; she is revealed to have feathery bird wings. She then swoops down to rescue McCoy, and they both exit the cave. The woman introduces herself as Ella Windstorm. Ella smashes the idol into pieces (much to McCoy's horror), but she assures him, revealing that there was a map inside the hollow idol. A map that leads to the ruins of the ancient city of Calavera, which contains the real treasure. McCoy is confused, so Ella tells more about her past; she is the last of the Volados, a race that flourished in Calavera, whose shamanic leader wielded the Serpent Blade, a weapon that he used to ensure balance. Within the shadows lay the Reptaras, a dark cult who wanted the Serpent Blade for themselves. War broke out, so the shaman locked the blade in a vault containing the Volados' treasures, sealing it with a spell that can only be broken by one of his descendants--Ella herself. Wanting some help, she forms an alliance with McCoy, who agrees to help her, and split the treasure between themselves. Unfortunately, they are stopped by Malana Mire, one of the last surviving Reptaras, and her henchmen, the smart but weak alpaca rider Alpaca Jack, and the strong but silly Dumbbell. While Jack and Mire grab Ella to take to Calavera, so that the latter can get the Serpent Blade, Dumbbell knocks out McCoy, and they all take off. All is not lost however, as McCoy's old friend Popoca appears, encouraging him to continue his journey, stop Malana Mire and rescue Ella. Hearing Popoca's words, McCoy gets up and follows the map, embarking on another adventure.

With Malana Mire defeated, she explodes in a brilliant blue flash, with the serpent blade cracking. As McCoy frees Ella, the place begins to crumble, so they grab all the treasure they could find, and make a run for it. The now reformed Alpaca Jack and Dumbbell lead them to safety from the vault, which explodes behind them as they escape to safety. They all board Malana's boat, the Brass Urchin and sail off, with hopefully more adventures ahead.

Gameplay[]

The gameplay is very similar to that of the previous game. However, there are some differences:

  • While in the first game, any Enemigo can be juggled infinitely, in the second game, after juggling the Enemigo 5 times, the Enemigo "flies up to the stratosphere" (as described in-game in the description for Airborne) and leaves an explosion of money behind.
  • In the first game, all areas except the last and twelfth one ended as Cactus McCoy found one of the pieces of the map to the true place of the Thorned Emerald. In the second game, though, each area has its own special treasure (like Silver Scorpion or Eternal Lantern), except for the last area, which has an honor medal for saving Ella after beating it.
  • In Curse of Thorns, there are always the same type of Enemigos near the end of the level. However, in Ruins of Calavera, there is a unique type of Enemigo for each area near the end of the level. They have the same bodies, but different faces and become generally stronger after every few levels.
  • If the game is complete to 100%, the Serpent Blade will be unlocked. (The previous game unlocked Hex Hatfield's pistol).
  • Punching Enemigos can now attack with their fists.
  • Checkpoints are introduced in this game.
  • You can carry objects without needing to drop any weapons being carried.

Glitches[]

  • The initial version of the game had some glitches. These glitches could even affect the gameplay and the completion of the game. For example, the "Projectile Pro" badge could never be completed, as Ladder Spears didn't count as a throwing weapon yet. This caused finishing the game with 100% and unlocking Serpent Blade to be impossible. When many people reported this problem in the forum of Flipline Studios, Flipline worked on the game once again and created a new version of 1.03.
  • Another glitch was the sound of ziplines sometimes continuing even though the zipline was already used and the level was quitted, which was said to be annoying by some players.
  • (v.1.04) Punching Enemigos sometimes lift their hands in the air (as if they were about to throw something at McCoy) If McCoy interferes while the punching enemies pick up a wooden crate. They can still move around, and hitting them again will make them stand in place As a result, these Enemigos could not be defeated by shooting or throwing weapons. Instead, melee must be used.
  • In Area 5, a clip detection glitch allows McCoy to travel through a wall. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cY1_f1yiQfs)
  • In Area 3, at the end of the level, in the battle with the Snap Dragons, if you don't kill the 3rd Whipping enemigo when the last Punching enemigo is dead, the door will be opened, but the Whipping enemigos will still be alive, you don't need to kill him.
