Cactus McCoy 2: The Ruins of Calavera

Dumbbell is the secondary antagonist of Cactus McCoy 2: The Ruins of Calavera. He is one of Malana Mire's apprentices alongside Alpaca Jack. He is encountered in Port Scamwell, the eight area of the game.

Formerly, Dumbbell served as a crew member aboard the ship Brass Urchin under Sawtooth Calhoon. One night, Malana Mire seized control of the ship, informing Dumbbell she was the new captain upon his awakening. However, in the game's conclusion, when Cactus McCoy defeats Malana Mire, Dumbbell gains control of the ship and allies with McCoy.

Flipdeck Info[]

  • Hometown: Driftwood Wharf
  • Occupation: Third Mate
  • Loves: Fishing
  • Hates: The Color Red

Dumbbell may be large and incredibly strong, but he’s very simple minded. He was originally a crew member of Sawtooth Calhoon aboard the Brass Urchin. That is until one night when Malana Mire stole the ship while Dumbbell was fast asleep on guard duty. When Dumbbell woke up, Malana simply told him Sawtooth gave her the ship, and she was the new captain.

Appearance[]

Dumbbell wears a blue helmet with white horns on each side. The horns have gold tips. He also wears a yellow bell around his neck. His torso clothing consists of a white tank top under a brown half jacket having blue borders. He wears blue pants and a brown belt with a gold buckle.

Personality[]

"Dumbbell no let you pass!"
— Dumbbell, before fighting Cactus McCoy

Dumbbell, as his name implies, is as dumb as a cow; in contrast to Alpaca Jack's intelligence. Because of this, he can easily be lured by McCoy into crashing the brown blocks with his horns attached to his hat. However, regardless of how stupid he is, he is brave and stubborn. He's stubborn enough to chase McCoy constantly during the boss battle and brave enough to come near the collapsing cave and lift the rock that blocks the exit of the cave, thus saving the lives of Cactus McCoy and Ella Windstorm. On the other hand, he might also have done the latter due to Alpaca Jack instructing him to do so rather than just his bravery.

Battle Description[]

Dumbbell is encountered in Port Scamwell, the eighth area of the game. Unlike Alpaca Jack, Dumbbell doesn't use any weapons to attack McCoy. Instead, he attacks with his horns and punches. He has three main types of attacks: dashing into McCoy with his horns, repeated punching, and doing a high jump followed by a ground pound over McCoy. The battle arena consists of upper and lower platforms initially separated. Dumbbell breaks the weak blocks connecting the two platforms by dashing into the blocks, allowing McCoy to access the lower part. The lower platform also leads to sections containing the fifth treasure and the end of the level.

Skills[]

  • Physical strength and (implied) Durability: Despite being simple to trick, he appears to be incredible strong, as such, he used his hands to knock out McCoy (although in McCoy's defense, he was caught unaware). He is capable of smashing blocks, something McCoy cannot do without explosives.
  • Hand-to-hand combat: During his boss fight he seems to be skilled at combat, not just mindless punching, he also blocks attacks and waits for opportunity to attack back.
  • Deceptive agility: When using horns, he becomes way more faster than usually he is, there's no way to outrun him. He also has a high-jumping smash attack.

Trivia[]

  • The word "dumbbell" actually means a heavy tool that is used in weightlifting exercises. However, it might have been intentionally used by Flipline Studios as the combination of two words, "dumb" and "bell", which precisely explain the physical and personal properties of that character.
  • Flipline Studios may also have preferred to give him the name "Dumbbell" simply because he is dumb (stereo-typically) and he wears a bell around his neck.
  • He was formerly a guard aboard the Brass Urchin.
